1) Time the amount of time you are in the water
2) Time your ascent and descent
Surfacing up too fast after a dive may cause you your life! This is due to the build up of nitrogen gas that we breathe in during our dives
A good diving watch should typically survive at least a 100m depth. Most analogue dive watch will have a uni-directional bezel with 5 minutes markings and allows you to easily read the amount of time spent underwater.
