Where You Can Resell And Keep ALL Profits
Am I too old to learn to dive (not scuba diving)
I am 16 years old nearly 17 from the UK. I have been a competitive artistic gymnast since i was 6 and i gave up in March. For 5 months i have done not much in terms of sport apart from a once a week adult gymnastics class. After watching the olympic diving i have become very intersted in it. From a divers point of view am I too old to think about learning? I am already a confident twister and can do somersaults with ease on the floor. Please help! x
Thankyou for your response but i would like to know from a competitive divers point of view whether there is any point trying. Thankyou
Whatever Hppenend to the good clean wrestling that I watched as a kid?
Now its about McMahon showing hi a.s.s. and bra and panties, I watch wrestling for the wrestling. not that I mind the divas but I enjoy watching wrestling with my kids but I constanly find myself turning the channel so as not to expose them to the perverted and profantity side of it, I have been a fan for over 30 yrs and it wasnt that way when i watched it as a kid, will there ever be a family orientaded wrestling program that will be more about wrestling than about tits and a.s.s?
Is it possible to be a Christian and also believe - to an extent - in evolution?
I am a Christian. I do not doubt that God created this world, so that makes me a Creationist. I am familiar with the basic theory of evolution, and enjoy watching shows on the Discovery Channel and such that deal with science and evolution - it interests me. I especially became interested in evolution after I learned to Scuba Dive - I learned about the underwater world and how certain creatures evolve and change. I also know from my diving experience that NOTHING, apart from God Himself, could have created such a world that functions in such a symbiotic and perfect manner. So, while I believe that God created everything on this Earth, I also believe that God gave everything in his creation the ability to adapt and change. Is this a wrong way of thinking?
I am glad someone brought up Darwin - I really don’t like those Jesus fish magnets that have the Jesus fish eating the darwin fish - you know what I am talking about? Darwin believed the same thing - micro-evolution, right? And wasn’t he a Christian, too?
Is alright for me to ditch my snorkel? It is the most worthless piece of SCUBA gear I own?
It seems that scuba divers are divided on this issue. On one hand, they say (I can’t speak from experience) that it’s necessary to have one in order to do a surface swim in rough waters, or to conserve airwhile surface swimming in calm waters.
On the other hand, I’ve met some instructors who never wear it except when teaching class because they claim that they’ve never used it, apart from certification dives, not even in the conditions described above.
My person feeling is that I hate the thing; it’s uncomfortable, no matter how much I try to adjust it or what type of holder I use to hold to my mask, it whacks me in the head or gets in my way. Plus, the quarries here in the midwest are not exactly rough waters, and if I have to surface swim, I can do it easier by swimming on my back.
So, fellow divers, what’s your take on this?
Thanks!
If you’re not a SCUBA diver, then please don’t respond… you don’t know what I’m talking about.
Thanks, bob, that’s the kind of info I need… from somebody who knows what they’re talking about!
Does anyone still scuba dive off La Jolla, getting abalone?
As a kid I use to scuba dive right off La Jolla Cove, bringing back several abalone and after processing them at the house, would chow down while watching the beautiful sunsets.
I have heard from friends still living out there, that the waters are not as clear as I might remember them being since alot of chemical pollutions have been dumped into the coastal areas of the Pacific Ocean from factories and sometimes, if standing high up on a cliff and looking down into the ocean below, you can clearly see the discoloration in the water.
Do people still rent sail planes at Torrey Pines, or has this been outlawed as well?
Roderick F, thanks for the great answer, and I too miss all the big abalone that use to be so available for the taking.
I tried to get some abalone recently from a friend of mine in SD, but he told me that they are dying off due to the chemical pollutants being tossed into the waters, now, the only way you can get abalone is from the farms, inland that raise the abalone and sell them, but I am told that the great taste is no longer there with the farm raised versions. I wonder if there are some big abalone off the Baja coast, off of Mexico, might take a trip down there next month and check it out. Used to go surfing down there a lot when I was a kid, great waves, especially when storms are brewing out at sea. Business will take me to Sunnyvale, CA to speak to the people who operate Yahoo! Inc regarding a complaint I filed against one of their employees for computer hacking, so in between meetings, will have some time to take the trip south.
I lived in La Jolla, PO backyard, thanx!
Scuba Diving Masks Tips
It’s simple to take care of your dive mask with some basic maintenance tips. And once you are underwater, there’s not much more annoying than a mask that constantly fogs up. Follow these simple steps for mask care and defogging so your mask will last you for many more dives.
Scuba Dive Mask Maintenance
Many times, new dive masks have an oily film over the surface. What works best to remove this? Good ‘ol toothpaste! Put a small drop on the lens and rub it over the areas that have this residue on them. This would also include the strap. Thoroughly rinse the mask in fresh water and reinspect to make sure it is clean. Repeat if necessary.
Just make sure it is not a gel toothpaste. I have always used plain Crest for this (and to clean my dive slate) with no ill effects. Removing this film will stop the mask from fogging.
Maintenance of your scuba dive mask is straightforward. No rocket science here. Here are some simple steps to follow:
Rinse your mask in freshwater after diving. You need to clean out any sand or grit that may have gotten into the mask and get rid of any salty residue.
Never dry your mask in direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can start to degrade the silicone so keep the mask out of the sun.
Thoroughly dry mask before storing. You don’t want anything to start growing on your mask. Not to mention possible odors.
Periodically clean your scuba dive mask. You should clean your mask with a little bit of toothpaste every now and then. It will help clean the lens and will also help keep it from fogging (see below). Rinse well after using the toothpaste and you are good to go.
Place you mask face-up. Don’t put your mask face down when you are not wearing it. The lens could get scratched - which could drive you nuts on every dive!
Mask Defogging Tips
There are basically 3 different ways to keep your scuba dive mask from fogging while you are diving. I have used all 3 while diving and all 3 are effective. I probably use the mask defogger solution the most.
Saliva - Yup, good ol’ spit. It really does work. I usually dry and put in on my mask when it is dry. Rinse out after rubbing it around your mask. Some people get queasy, bacteria, etc. But we’ve done it and no harm has come to us! GOOD in a pinch.
Prepared Solution - You can buy a commercial mask defogger solution at any dive shop for a few dollars. They last a long time and do work. Just put a couple drops on your lenses and rub it around. Rinse it out thoroughly, you don’t want to get solution in your eyes. Be prepared to share with lots of other divers on the boat. There is always someone that ran out, forgot, etc. You’ll be the hero.
Toothpaste - If the above 2 don’t work, it may need a more thorough cleaning with toothpaste as described above (non-gel). This should solve any problem with fogging that you have.
If you follow these simple scuba mask care and maintenance tips, you should have a nice clear dive. With proper care, your scuba diving mask should last for years and many, many dives. Have fun!
