Why would you spit in your scuba mask?

Ok so I’m watching ‘Dirty Jobs’ on the Discovery channel. Mike is scuba diving into a hippo tank, and the guys who works at the Aquarium gave him the mask to go down, and he asks “Did you spit in your mask?” and Mike says “I thought they just did that in the movies.”

1) I’ve never seen anyone do that in the movies.
2) Why are you supposed to do that?
